Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What do I wear?
A. Any loose and light clothing is recommended. A T-Shirt or vest, and a tracksuit or loose shorts. Don't wear restrictive or warm clothing. For Karate and Judo a proper uniform called a 'gi' is eventually required. But for Kickboxing you can wear any light clothing. No shoes are required as the Dojo is fully padded.
Q. Will I get hurt?
A. No. Shihan Max will not tolerate aggression or recklessness in his dojo. Although many of our students have chosen to compete in National and International competitions, Shindokan is non-competitive. The choice to compete is yours and you will have Shihan Max's support either way. Our emphasis is on fitness, self control and defence. Accidents, however, do occur from a misplaced punch or kick - an apology is always given - and you could end up with a few strained muscles or bruises. Shindokan strives to keep the training environment friendly, safe, and comfortable.
Q. How often should I train?
A. We recommend at least twice a week. Some of our more serious students train 4 times a week. The choice is yours but try to make regular training a normal living habit. Dedication will bring many rewards as you progress and refine your technique.
Q. Are there different levels of training?
A. You can do Kickboxing on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We cater for all levels and beginners and experts are mixed. No matter what your level of fitness or age - please join us, it's the best way to loose weight and you go at your own pace. In Karate and Judo, there is a grading syllabus and levels are reflected with coloured belts. Beginners wear white and will progress to yellow after a few months. A few more colours and many years of training are required before reaching 1st Dan Black Belt. Shihan Max is a 8th Dan Karate master after 30 years of training.
Q. How many people are there per class?
A. This varies per class from as little as 5 people to as many as 15. Classes will always be kept small enough for personal attention and to ensure each person can train effectively.
Q. Can I just try it once to see if I like it?
A. Yes. Your first lesson is free. We are willing to bet you will be back for more.
